Dr Ka-lam Wong

Dr. Michael Ka-lam WONG is one of the heart transplant, left ventricular assist device (LVAD) and extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) physician in Cardiac Medical Unit, Grantham Hospital. Dr. Wong received his medical degree from the University of Hong Kong in 2005 with distinction in medicine and pediatrics. He completed his postgraduate training in Internal Medicine and Cardiology in the Department of Medicine, Queen Mary Hospital. He was interested in management of cardiogenic shock, myocarditis and mechanical circulatory support during his cardiology training. He received training on ECMO from National Taiwan University Hospital in 2010 and then established co-joint CCU-ICU ECMO service for cardiogenic shock complicating AMI and myocarditis. He has been the course co-director of the Asia-Pacific Extra-corporeal Life Support Organization (AP-ELSO) ECMO training course since 2014. Subsequently he successfully represented Cardiology service in Hong Kong for the application of immediate life threatening events (ILTE) funding for venoarterial (VA)-ECMO service in 2015 to allow more wide spread application of VA-ECMO in Hong Kong public hospitals. He then received one year overseas fellowship training in the field of advanced heart failure and transplantation at the Mayo Clinic, Rochester, Minnesota, USA. He is currently Associate Consultant in Grantham Hospital with clinical focus in advanced heart failure, mechanical circulatory support, heart transplantation as well as end-stage pulmonary arterial hypertension before lung transplantation.
