As a clinical cardiologist specializing in cardiovascular imaging, my research focuses on development of novel imaging techniques to understand the process of ventricular remodeling noninvasively in patients with valvular heart disease and rare myocardial diseases. To this end, my laboratory uses multiple imaging modalities, including echocardiography, cardiovascular magnetic resonance and positron emission tomography (PET). I collaborate closely with in-house radiologists, nuclear medicine doctors and have developed novel imaging techniques such as T1 mapping and various PET tracers to better understand the diverse aspects of cardiovascular disease and how this is linked to patient outcome.

The second topic of my research is to develop and apply machine learning tools to understand the possible heterogeneity of various cardiovascular disease and to fine phenotype these diseases for a more precise prediction of outcome. My research uses a variety of machine learning and mathematic modeling, such as cluster analysis, latent class analysis, random forest models and topological data analysis, applying these analytical pipelines to data generated from electronic health records from our hospital to nationwide claims data. My recent interest in dealing with big data has also expanded to using genetic data from large public database such as the Korean Genetic and Epidemiologic Study and the UK biobank

The last topic of my research is to apply new nanomedicine technology for a better treatment of heart failure. To this objective, I collaborate with the School of Chemical Engineering at Seoul National University to develop a new form of electronic cardiac mesh for a more optimized cardiac resynchronization therapy.
